How to write a synthesis essay: Four main parts

The key requirement for writing a synthesis paper is ability to grasp the information from different sources and to present it as an entirety. It develops strong analytical skills and an ability to digest and synthesize points.

Part 1. Understanding the requirements.

  • Assure that you realize what the synthesis essay is and how it differs from other types of writing. It is meant to connect different aspects into one solid position.
  • When exploring the topic pay attention to the facts, which are bonded with the subject you need.
  • A synthesis method can be used for different kinds of writing such as an argumentative essay, a review, or an expository paper as, in general, synthetic way of thinking categorizes facts and present them for reader’s understanding.

Part 2. Preparing your topic.

  • Note that your topic should be broad enough in order for you to be able to bring different sources together and pull the ideas you are meant to synthesize.
  • Elaborate the necessary sources. Give yourself pretty much time for this stage as some of the resources may be hard to find and reading and analyzing sometimes takes more time than the writing process itself.
  • Do not leave without your attention the books and articles assigned by the teacher. You may lose points if you do so.
  • Build up your thesis statement. It can be the first or the last sentence of your introductory paragraph.

Part 3. Outlining

  • Remember that structure is an important component of the successful paper. A proper outline can help you with it.
  • You can choose different ways of how to form your essay. It can be the standard organization of 5 paragraphs: introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Also, you can use such models as comparative, concession, example and illustration for it, arguments and counterarguments.
  • 5 paragraphs structure and the listed above approaches can be laid in together that will make your essay more persuading.

Part 4. Writing the synthesis paper.

  • There are two basic methods of synthesis writing: summarizing and listing the reasons.
  • Summary means digesting and summing up the main points of your sources used and building the argument on them.
  • List of reasons requires making the small points that are correlating with the topic and giving the evidence for them from the sources.
  • Follow the outline created and use your notes and citations. If you have the basis already it will be much easier for you to grow the thoughts around them.
  • Do not use “I”-expressions, make sure you are writing in the third person. Make sure your manner does not sound too emotional and informal Follow the academic demands for writing.
  • Make your paper flow: do not forget to link your paragraphs and sentences with the help of transitive phrases.
  • Dedicate some time to proofreading and revising. Be sure to correct all the mistakes and check them with the manuals or guides for writing. Remember that grammar or spelling errors can spoil the most valuable ideas.
  • Think about the title for your essay. It should reveal the points from the thesis statement and its supporting materials.
