Surely, you are feeling both excited and terrified now thinking about the prospect of moving away from home and starting to live on your own. It’s totally normal, it’s the first time in your life you are about to start adult life separately from your parents. Here are some crucial skills you better learn during the summer before heading to college.
Laundry
Yes, moving to college means you will have to do the laundry on your own. That is not as simple as you might think. First of all, learn to keep up with your laundry. Believe me, it’s not funny to have a pile of things that will take 3 loads and the whole day to have everything washed. Another tip, always separate white and colored clothes before putting them in the wash. Check the labels of your things, especially your favorite ones, that may require some special treatment. You may also want to learn the amount of soap or detergent needed to be measured before the washing as it’s also necessary to know.
Defrosting Your Dorm Fridge
The fridge in your dorm room will not miraculously keep itself clean, and in order to wash it efficiently you will have to defrost it from time to time. That’s not an easy goal as well, unfortunately. Luckily, modern fridges require minimal maintenance and are comfortable to have even in such small spaces as a typical dorm room. Defrosting the fridge is also important and necessary before heading home for your breaks so that is the skill you surely have to maintain.
- Turn the fridge off and make sure to pull all the items out of it;
- Remove all the shelves and make sure to clean them accordingly;
- Cover the area inside the fridge and around it with towels as the ice will melt and leak out as fridge defrosts;
- Once all the ice has melted, wipe all the water inside the fridge with towels, wash all the areas, and dry everything.
Just remember that naturally defrosting the fridge takes as long as approximately a day, so plan the time for doing this procedure beforehand.
Money Budgeting
If you have already had the first job experience, you probably know how important is to keep track of your finances, especially if you no longer have your parents around to buy you a burger. There are a lot of special applications for such purposes, you can surely try one of them. It will show how much money you have on your account, see all your withdrawals and all the other financial activity. It will help you to set limits on how much money you can spend per week or per month depending on the amount you have.
